Well known actor and all-around eccentric personality Nicolas Cage has found himself in a bit of a legal pickle. His new marriage came crashing to the ground after just four days, leaving him facing a potentially nasty and, more importantly, costly divorce fight.
Cage, 55, reportedly married Erika Koike during a night of drinking in Las Vegas after dating for the past year. He reportedly filed for an annulment after four days, seeking to undue his drunken decision without having to go through a divorce. According to court documents, “Prior to obtaining a marriage license and participating in a marriage ceremony, [they] were both drinking to the point of intoxication.”
TMZ reported that Koike was willing to get divorced but did not agree with the idea that their marriage was a drunken or impulsive decision worthy of an annulment. Additionally, she believes she is eligible for spousal support and will pursue that in the upcoming divorce.
Much of the potential acrimony could have been avoided by having a solid prenuptial agreement in place prior to their Vegas nuptials. You don’t have to be a famous actor to benefit from one; everyone can benefit from having a plan in place before entering such an important legal relationship, particularly business owners, professionals, and people getting married later in life.
An experienced family law attorney can help you identify your needs and create a durable prenuptial agreement that achieves your goals.
